Disturbed gaseous exchange, gills will become white. Fish show signs of distress, try to jump, out of the aquarium, exhibit jerky swiveling movements.

Description:
Poisoning can be caused by placing fish in chlorinated water or by adding such water into the aquarium. It is not uncommon for city water to test positive for chlorine straight out of the tap, especially during the warm seasons.

How to cure:
Sick fish should be moved to fresh water. Leave aquarium water stand fish-free for 1-2 days. Another option is to filter water by adding activated carbon to the filter. In this case it is necessary to provide intensive aeration. Chlorine removal products can also do the trick.

Prevention:
Before chlorinated water is added into the aquarium it should be left in an open bowl for 2-3 days or heated at temperatures of 80-90C (180-195F) for 2 hours. Another option is to perform artificial aeration.
