In some regions water contains insufficient amount of iodine. If fish do not get enough iodine with food, they develop, like people, a goiter characterized by the appearance of a big tumour near the throat. In large fish it can spread behind the gill cavity. An operation helps only temporarily. In a few weeks, the tumour will appear again. If iodine is added into feed, even large goiters will disappear. This can be achieved by regularly added mineral supplements during water change. Giving your fish feed containing iodine will help both prevent and treat the disease.
How to cure:
If the goiter has disappeared, fish should be given iodine-containing feed on a daily basis. Mineral supplements should be regularly added to the feed. After that it will be enough to give fish iodine-containing feed twice a week.
